    Preparing for your surgery
The following instructions cover information common to most surgeries. Because no two patients or procedures are alike, be sure to talk with your doctor or nursing staff to learn about special instructions they might have. If there is any conflict between the directions your physician gives you and those you find in this brochure, follow your doctor’s instructions.

    • Health Information Form: Before your surgery, please complete your health evaluation form and return it to us by fax at (916) 781-1998, by mail or in person.
    • Transportation: Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery. Under no circumstances can you drive yourself or take public transportation.
    • Food and Drink: Do not eat or drink anything after 11pm the night before your surgery, unless otherwise instructed.
    • Minors: Patients who are 0-17 years MUST have a parent or guardian stay at the facility for the patient’s entire stay, even during surgery.
    • Child Care: Please arrange for child care for siblings. There is no play area at the center and the wait will be 4-5 hours.
    • Alcohol: Do not consume any alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to surgery.
    • Tobacco: Do not smoke or use tobacco products one week before your surgery.
    • Medications: Be sure to discuss your medications and vitamin supplements with your physician. Ask if you need to modify your intake and the best way to do so. Avoid any over-the-counter medications, including aspirin and ibuprofen, during the week before surgery, and avoid herbal supplements two weeks before.

Three days before your surgery, please let your doctor or our staff know if you feel you may be running a fever or coming down with the flu or other illness. Depending on your surgery, your doctor may prefer to reschedule for a time when you feel better.

    The day of surgery

    • • Try to a get a good night’s rest before surgery. A well-rested, well-cared for body heals faster.

    • If you brush your teeth after 11pm the night before surgery, be careful not to swallow the water.
    • Wear comfortable flat shoes (no high heels) and loose-fitting clothes that are easy to put on and remove. Be sure to ask if there will be any bandages, so that you can plan your clothing accordingly.

    • You can bring your hearing aid, dentures, walker or crutches with you.
    • Remove all jewelry, including all body piercings and metal hair clips, before arriving at the surgery center.
    • Please don’t bring valuables with you, including laptops, cell phones or other expensive items. We have wireless internet service if your ride brings a laptop.

    After your surgery
Following your surgery, you will be moved to a recovery area until you are ready to go home. Once you are out of acute recovery, you may have a visitor stay with you as soon as appropriate. On average, patients leave the surgery center about one to two hours after completion of their surgery.

You’ll receive specific instructions to take with you covering your post-operative care. Be sure you and your care provider understand the instructions before you go home.

Do not be alarmed if you feel some discomfort in the area of your surgery. However, contact your physician if you feel you are having problems resulting from surgery.

Below are general guidelines to follow after surgery:

    • A responsible adult MUST drive you home. We recommend someone stay with you for the first 24 hours.
    • Rest and relax until your doctor says you can return to your normal routine.
    • Do not drink alcohol or drive while taking pain medication.
    • Follow your physician’s instructions regarding medication, dressings, rest and diet.
    • Get as much rest as possible to allow your body the time to heal. Taking good care of yourself in the first few days after surgery can speed your recovery and prevent complications.

If you notice excessive bleeding, or have any other reason to think you need urgent help, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

    Your rights as a patient
It’s important you know that as a patient, you are entitled to specific rights and treatment. If you feel you are not being treated in a fair manner, please call our administrator at (916) 781-5263.

Your physician and/or nursing staff should discuss all pre- and post-operational instructions with you prior to surgery. Since every case is different, be sure that you understand what you need to do to prepare for and recover from your surgery. If you need additional advice, you can call your physician or our surgery center at (916) 781-1999.

We hope you have a VERY GOOD experience with us and that you enjoy a quick return to good health.
